The Institute of Humanities and Creative Arts at the University of Worcester invites applications for a fully-funded, full-time Ph.D. studentship on colonial continuities and discontinuities in German history up to 1945.

This will be an interdisciplinary study with a historical focus and will contribute to the University of Worcester’s Transnational Studies Research Group, which provides a forum for new and innovative research into transnational contexts and intercultural encounters. As such, we are interested in a wide range of topics and approaches, with local, national, or international focus. Examples might include the following:

- the development of institutions like colonialist or academic organizations.
- competing representations in various media of Germans’ relationship with the wider world.
- publicity or propaganda campaigns and the shifting political significance of empire in national or local politics.

The key is that the student should explore the relevance of a colonial framework for interpreting Germany’s history across one or more of the major political breaks of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This research is funded by the University of Worcester, and the student will carry out a research project under the direction of Dr. Jeff Bowersox. On successful completion, this project will lead to the award of a higher research degree (PhD).

Applicants should have a good first degree in History or German, although applicants from other subject disciplines will be considered, and applicants should normally have, or be about to obtain, a Masters qualification in History or a closely related subject. Excellent oral and written English are a must, as is a reading knowledge of German. The applicant must also be committed and enthusiastic about completing a higher research degree.

The successful applicant will receive a tax free bursary of £12,300 per annum from the University of Worcester plus a limited budget to support their research. Fees will be paid in full at the UK/EU rate for home and EU citizens. Overseas students are welcome to apply but will need to fund the balance of fees for Overseas Research Students (approx. £6000 per annum).
